Adware Software integrated into or bundled with a program that provides streaming or pop up ads. It is usually seen by the programmer as a way to recover programming development costs, and in some cases it may allow the program to be provided to the user free of charge or as a fully working trial version. The advertising income may allow or motivate the programmer to continue to write, maintain and upgrade the software product.
Anti-Spam. Software utilities that reduce the abuse of both spamming, that flood the in-boxes of E-mail users with junk E-mails, wasting time and money, and often carrying offensive, fraudulent, or damaging content.
Anti-Virus. A type of software utility that scans your system to identify viruses or other harmful software, e.g. malicious software (malware), either by scanning files to look for known definitions within a virus dictionary or identifying suspicious behavior from any computer program which might indicate infection. Such analysis may include data captures, port monitoring, scanning the receipt of emails and other methods.
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). A low-level protocol family associated with high-speed digital networks. Incorporates mechanisms for traffic prioritization and various service qualities designed to be used with real-time traffic, such as voice calls, but increasingly accepted as a suitable system for data networks.
Attack. A deliberate attempt to compromise the security of a computer system or deprive others of the use of the system.
Authentication. The process of validating the credentials of a person, computer process, or device. Authentication requires that the person, process, or device making the request provide a credential that proves it is what or who it says it is. Common forms of credentials are digital signatures, smart cards, biometric data, and a combination of user names and passwords.
Authorization. The process of granting a person, computer process, or a device access to certain information, services, or functionality. Authorization is derived from the identity of the person, computer process, or device requesting access, which is verified through authentication.
